How to Wear Tuxedo for Prom

Promenade dance, most commonly called a prom, is a semi-formal dance or gathering of high school students. Usually, this event is held near the end of the school year. If this event could be dedicated for junior high school students which is referred to as “junior prom” or ones dedicated to seniors as “senior prom”.  Many high schools are now celebrating a combination “Junior/Senior Prom” for both juniors and seniors.

Yearly, several students fail to follow a somewhat relatively simple procedures in prom dressing. Should it be a lack of knowledge or apathy, this practice must be put to end. Whatever the reason is, Folchi’s Tuxedo and Menswear is here to give you a guideline for your prom. Just carefully follow this simple tip and you will have the best prom of your life.

What should a guy wear to prom, exactly? A suit? A tuxedo?

Let’s take a look at tuxedo first.

Tuxedo is a man’s evening and formal wear. Thus, making it one of the most appropriate to wear in formal events like prom. It is very important to remember to remain true to a “black-tie” event, your tuxedo should be black.  It is only a polite way that it is not really an option. However, today some prom students are wearing suits, blazers, and tuxedos that are not black.

Another important thing to remember is that the tuxedo should always fit very well for you otherwise it will look like you are wearing your father’s tuxedo, and no one wants that.

Shirt should fit well for you. You can never go wrong whether you choose pleats or not. Pleated shirt is for those who wants a classic, traditional look. If you wish for a modern, sleek look, non-pleated is best for you.

Something you should consider is the type of cuff: French or barrel. Barrel is the most common type where you can find it on any buttoned shirt. French cuff on the other hand is a double cuff formed by folding back a wide band at the end of a sleeve, usually fastened by a cuff link.

The style of your collar should match the style of your tuxedo. The winged collar is specially reserved for formal occasion dress. Wearing a winged collar requires it to be paired with a tuxedo

Patent leather shoes are acceptable for black tie; however, they shall be in lace up and not loafer form. If you decide for calfskin shoes, they should be well polished, shiny and free of accents and other shoe accessories. A well-polished black cap toe is the ideal shoe to wear with a tuxedo.

As for your tie, you will be wearing a bow tie. That is the end of the story. We understand that some tuxedo renters will offer the option of a regular necktie. That does not mean you should wear one.

Wear a bow tie to Prom

Most places won’t even give you an option when it comes to your bow tie.  Wear a bow tie because of tradition. You’re wearing a tuxedo to show respect for an occasion. You must be at ease in your tuxedo, and part of that involves being at ease with tradition. Just choose a normal-sized, neatly tied bow tie.

Cummerbund or Vest

A basic black cummerbund is recommended for the prom. A cummerbund is a broad waist sash, usually pleated, which is often worn with single-breasted tuxedos. The cummerbund is essentially a strip of fabric worn around the waist originally intended to catch crumbs as they fell onto the gentleman’s lap; therefore, the folds face up. As usual, the appropriate color is black. Always go with the classic look. This small rule will always reward you.

Pocket Square

A pocket square is a swatch of fabric that you fold up and put in your top jacket pocket. It can be a functional handkerchief or just decorative. A traditional pocket square will have the hem rolled, contrary to handkerchiefs. Pocket squares are usually made in fabrics such as silk, cotton, linen or wool.

As a visible fashion item there are a wide variety of ways to fold a pocket square, ranging from the austere to the flamboyant. If you are not sure what color to choose it is recommended to use a white pocket square. This is a simple, classy way to show that you know what you’re doing but that you prefer to stay within the lines.

It is not that hard to follow this simple guideline. Attention to details and being proactive is an essential character one might remember.  Who knows you might be the best-dressed boy at the prom.

What’s the Difference Between A Tuxedo and A Suit for Prom?

Physical difference

The primary physical difference between a tuxedo and a suit is the presence of satin. Tuxedos have satin facing on the lapels, buttons, pocket trim, and a satin side stripe down the leg of the trousers. Suits don’t incorporate any satin and usually have either plastic buttons or buttons faced with the same fabric as the coat.

Tuxedos are reserved mostly for a very special event in your life. Wearing one indicates formality of the occasion. When you received an invitation that indicates “black tie optional”, that is only a polite way that it is necessary to wear a tuxedo. If the host is suggesting that everyone must wear black tie, then everyone should.

You can wear a suit anytime of the day, anywhere you go. You can even wear a suit at grocery store.

Events you commonly wear tuxedos:

  • A ball or formal dance
  • The opening of the opera, ballet or symphony
  • A formal dinner party or reception
  • Dinner at a formal or fine dining restaurant
  • Prom

You only wear tuxedo after 5 pm. It's too formal to be worn during the day.
